LAB - Observing Plant and Animal cells AP Biology MAKE UP
Use this site: http://www.uic.edu/classes/bios/bios100/labs/celllab.htm
Go to living cells and use 1) Human cheek cells 2) elodea 3) Plasmolyzed elodea
You may need to check other sites to figure how to label. Label each like in instructions.
All are 1000x mag. Other sites may be used
1) Observing animal cells – Epithelial (cheek) cells
Materials – Toothpick, slide, cover slip, eye dropper, iodine
Procedure – Obtain some epithelial cells by lightly scraping a toothpick inside your cheek
and smear edge of toothpick on center of slide. Place a drop of iodine on center of smear,
cover with cover slip.
Sketch 2-3 cells neatly and large. Label cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus and total
magnification. Title sketch
2) Observing plant cells – Elodea Leaf
Materials – elodea, dropper, fresh water
Procedure – Prepare a wet mount of one small elodea leaflet. Use fresh water. Sketch 2 or
3 cells next to each other. Enlarge to show structure.
Label nucleus, cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, chloroplasts and total magnification
Title sketch
3) Observing plant cells in a hypertonic solution (Elodea in high salt solution)
Saltwater will cause plasmolysis, (loss of water from cytoplasm)
Materials – same as above but use salt water
Procedure – prepare wet mount of elodea leaf using drop of salt water solution instead of
fresh water. Sketch several cells enlarged to show structure. Label cell wall, cell
membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus, chloroplasts and total magnification. Title sketch
Questions: Do on separate paper. Attach to this sheet
1) Describe your observations of cheek epithelial cells. Name the organelles visible.
2) Describe your observations of the Elodea cells. Name the organelles visible.
3) What is cytoplasmic streaming? Did you observe it in plant cells?
4) What is Plasmolysis? Explain what happened when salt water was added to the plant cell
environment.
5) Could you observe a central vacuole? What is the role of the central vacuole in the plant
cells?
6) Why do plant cells have a cell wall and animal cells do not?
7) Explain the role of turgor pressure in keeping a plant cell’s structure
8) Explain the role of chloroplasts in a plant cell. Why do animal cells not have them?
9) Though not visible in a light microscope, Are mitochondria in both animal and plant cells?
Why or why not?
