A: It is a network of glycoproteins and proteoglycans that extends outward from the surface
of cells.
2. What is another structure the glycocalyx is related to?
A: Extracellular matrix
3. What is the function of the glycocalyx?
A: It protects the outer surface of the cell from mechanical disruption and allows for cells to
attach itself to other surfaces. It is unique to every individual and serves as a key mechanism
for immune system to identify, which cells belong and which are foreign.
4. What are some mammalian cells that have a glycocalyx? What is its function?
A:
 Mature platelets—allows them to adhere to injury site
 Vascular endothelial cells—reduces friction of blood flow
