“Cells Alive” Webquest
Follow the directions in order to complete the webquest.
How to get onto the website:
1. Open up your browser and type in this address:
http://cellsalive.com/cells/3dcell.htm
2. Read through this first webpage in order to answer questions 1-2 on this worksheet.
3. Click on the green “TAKE ME TO THE ANIMATION” link.
4. Choose the “Animal Cell” link.
5. Use the links to the organelles on the bottom to find the answers to questions 3-30.
 Please return to the cell diagram after you answer the questions on a certain
organelle. You need to be able to see where the organelle is located in the cell.
6. Once you finish the animal cell click on the link to the plant cell. Notice the differences
between the two. Use both diagrams to answer questions 31-34.
Webquest Questions:
Answer these questions on a separate sheet of paper using the website provided in your own words. Please make sure
your answers are neat and legible. You may use charts or pictures in order to answer the questions.
1. What are the 2 types of living cells?
2. Make a Venn Diagram that compares and contrasts the 2 different types of cells. Include
3 differences for each side and 3 similarities in the middle.
Example of a Venn Diagram:
Differences
Differences
Similarities
Nucleus
3. What is located in the nucleus and is responsible for providing the cell with its unique
characteristics?
4. Why is a liver cell different than a muscle cell?
5. What happens to the DNA when a cell starts to divide?
Cell Wall
6. Does an animal cell have a cell wall?
Smooth and Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
7. Define: Endoplasmic Reticulum.
8. What is the abbreviated way to say Endoplasmic Reticulum?
9. Why is the smooth endoplasmic reticulum called smooth?
10. Why is the rough endoplasmic reticulum called rough?
11. What is the main function of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
12. What is the main function of the rough endoplasmic reticulum?
Mitochondrion
13. What is the main function of the mitochondrion?
14. A mitochondrion has a(n) _____________________________ membrane. (Like the
nucleus.)
15. In the mitochondrion, food is combined with oxygen to produce
_______________________________.
Lysosomes
16. Lysosomes contain hydrolytic __________________ in order to aid the cell with
digestion.
17. What do lysosomes do in white blood cells?
18. What happens when there is an uncontrolled release of lysosome materials into the
cytoplasm?
Vacuole
19. Define: Vacuole.
20. In animal cells are vacuoles large or small?
21. What are 3 functions of the vacuole in a plant cell?
Nucleolus
22. What is the main function of the nucleolus?
Cell Membrane
23. Every cell is enclosed in a membrane, a double layer of _________________________.
24. The heads of the bilayer are known as __________________________________.
25. The tails of the phospholipids are _____________________________________.
26. The cell membrane acts as a ___________________________________________
to the uncontrolled flow of water.
27. The membrane is made more complex by the presence of
numerous ___________________________.
Ribsomes
28. What are ribosomes?
29. What happens in ribosomes?
