That all living things have basic cells, yeah Anton believes it
Define cell:
The basic unit of all living things!
What was Anton van Leeuwenhoek’s contribution to cell discovery?
In 1674 Anton van Leeuwenhoek was the first scientist to look at pond water
through a microscope (he designed and built many microscopes during his life).
In the water he found tiny one-celled organisms. He then looked at the plaque
from his teeth under a microscope and saw cells within the substance. Anton
was credited with viewing the first living animal and bacteria cells under a
microscope.
List the 3 parts of the cell theory
1. All living organisms are made of cells
2.
Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things
3. All cells are produced from other cells
The first to see it
Hooke was wow’d by a cork
When he put it under a microscope
What was Robert Hooke’s contribution to cell discovery?
In the 1600s Robert Hooke was the first to look at cork under a microscope. He
noticed that it looked like honey-comb. This action resulted in him being credited
for discovering plant cells by viewing the cell walls in this cork tissue. He actually
called these “cells” (and was the first to do so) because the boxlike spaces in the
cork reminded him of the living quarters in a monastery….called cells. He was
the first scientist to discover the idea of cells and coin the term.
Plants have cellular walls, but we don’t need them at all
What is the shape of a plant cell?
rectangular
What is the function of the cell wall?
provide support and protection
Only
plant
cells contain a cell wall.
Our little membranes are flexible and strong
Why don’t our cells (animal cells) have a cell wall?
Animal cells do not have this wall, and are more circular and flexible. Instead,
animal cells have a strong and flexible cell membrane that can bend and move to fit
into tiny spaces. This allows the animal the ability to move around much more
freely than a plant or something like a tree.
They pack their vacuoles in
What is the function of a vacuole?
the plant cell has vacuoles where extra sugar/food generated from sunlight can be
stored for later use.
What type of cell contains large vacuoles?
Plant cells
With chloroplast they begin
Collecting sunlight
Afraid of the dark again
What is the function of a chloroplast?
This green substance, chlorophyll,
which is found in the chloroplasts, collects sunlight and converts it into sugar that
the plant then uses as energy
What type of cell contains chloroplasts?
What color is a chloroplast?
Plant cells
Green
What is the name of the green pigment in the chloroplast?
Chlorophyll
Now I gain control, grab the joystick and manage the nucleus
What is the function of the nucleus?
The nucleus is the brain of the cell
and controls and directs all cell functioning
What object, other than a cell, contains a nucleus?

The
nucleus.
nuclear envelope

The
cell membrane

Genetic glow sticks
Provided by the chromatin
Define chromatin:
the genetic information in the cell, including DNA and
proteins that form chromosomes which all define the cell’s genetic code
The nucleolus brings the ribs
What is the function of the nucleolus?
Creates ribosomes, which then produce
protein for support/structure for both plant and animal cells
Outside the envelope, waiting in the cytoplasm
Define cytoplasm:
The cytoplasm is a jelly-like substance that fills
the cell, which is mostly made of water. . Inside the cytoplasm there is a protein
matrix (created by the ribosomes) to help give the cell its shape. In animal cells,
the jelly-like cytoplasm allows for almost total flexibility, in concert with the flexible
cell membrane, so that the cell is able to move through small spaces such as
blood vesicles.
The mitochondria treat you like a meal
What is the function of mitochondria?
This is commonly referred to as the “power
house” of the cell because it is where the energy for the cell is made. The mitochondria
generate adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which is the main source of the cell’s energy.
What is a meal to a mitochondria?
What type of body cells would likely have LOTS of mitochondria? Why?
Heart, digestive system
While they try to convert you into something real – tasty
What is your favorite food?
The longer you stand, waiting in the cytoplasm
Lysosomes look at you like you’re bacteria…
What is the function of a lysosome? These are digestive organelles that break down
and dispose of lots of worn out stuff like bacteria so it does not damage the cell.
The Lysosome’s role in the cell is similar to immune and digestive systems in the
body…it digests, breaks down, and disposes of potential threats to the body.
They’re little round structures filled with chemicals that don’t feel
Aiming to break you down
The lysosome can be compared to what two human body systems?
1.
Immune
2.
Digestive
Mr. Nucleolus brings the ribosomes that make proteins
What is the function of a ribosome? Produce protein for support/structure for both
plant and animal cells. Each ribosome makes protein that is distributed around
the cell
They take an endoplasmic trip around the cell on reticulum 19
What is the function of endoplasmic reticulum (ER)?
The Endoplasmic
Reticulum (ER) is a series of canals that transport materials around the cell
The
ribosomes
are often attached to ER. This is called
rough ER.
If
ribosomes
are NOT attached to ER, it is called
smooth
ER.
You know they’re received
Cause the golgi bodies put them in these vesicles
Where do proteins go after being transported through the ER?
Golgi bodies
What is the function of golgi bodies?
The golgi bodies act like the cell’s
mailroom  they package proteins into vesicles then they get shipped off to
another part of the cell, or different cells, to be used wherever they are needed.
What is a vesicle?
Golgi bodies are often called the
Storage unit for cell energy

they package proteins into vesicles then they get shipped off to another
part of the cell, or different cells, to be used wherever they are needed.

Music Video Extension Activity
1. Hand out or project the lyrics and read them out loud and discuss their meaning
2. Play the song for the students, multiple times, encouraging them to sing along
3. Use the student lyric guide in place of, or to supplement class notes
4. Allow students class time, in small groups, to “act” out a portion of the song
5. Film the student groups singing/acting out the song
