Protista (Amoeba) Amoeba Characteristics of Amoeba: Member of Protista Kingdom. Unicellular microscopic organism found at the bottom of freshwater ponds or muddy soil. Eukaryotic (membrane enclosed organelles) Heterotrophic (- takes in food). Omnivore (- eats other plants and animals) Carries out all life processes! Structure of Amoeba Please be familiar with diagram of amoeba Handout 1 Cell Membrane: holds in cell contents and allows gas exchange. Nucleus: controls the cell activities. Food Vacuole: release enzymes to digest and absorb food. Pseudopodia: are false feet used for movement and also to surround its prey. Structure of Amoeba Cytoplasm: - contains digested material. - moves into pseudopodia causing movement. - divided into two parts: Ectoplasm: outer cytoplasm. Endoplasm: inner cytoplasm. Structure of Amoeba Contractile Vacuole: maintains salt and water balance within cell (Osmoregulation): - collects water entering cell by osmosis. - swells, touches cell membrane. - bursts expelling water.
