Psychology 312: Essay Questions Test 1 G9 Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Summer 2016 Following is a list of essay questions. The essay questions on Test 1 will be taken from this list. You should prepare for the essay part of that test by being able to answer all of them. Your answer must consist of complete sentences. Outline answers will lose points. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Describe in detail two methods for determining the absolute threshold. Why do we see light, as opposed to other forms of electromagnetic radiation? Give at least two reasons. These reasons may include those presented in lecture. For each reason, describe how having receptors for light is better for us than having receptors for other forms of electromagnetic energy. Draw a picture of and describe the cells of the human retina. Be sure to include current beliefs concerning the function of each type of retinal cell. Hint – there are 5 major categories, but one of those categories – the category of receptors – has 4 distinct cell types. Describe the two major visual “streams” – the “where” and the “what” streams, beginning with the retina and ending with the lobe of the cortex at which each “stream ends. Describe the results of one study which illustrated the differences between them. We have a dual-receptor visual system – rods and cones. Describe the major differences between the two receptor types. Describe why we might have a dual-receptor visual system. Describe how the systems differ, including the individual receptor differences, differences in convergence ratios between the two receptor systems, and differences in locations of the two systems. Include figures where appropriate to illustrate your points. Describe two “modules” found in the brain. Tell what the neurons in each module primarily respond to. Describe where the module is. Say what “stream” the module is likely part of. For this response, do not use either of the two “streams” referred to above as a “module”. Describe four of the Gestalt Organizing principles, with a figure illustrating each.
