Mitosis and Meiosis Simulation Lab Mitosis Materials: Get a simulation envelope. Remove the contents and check to see that there are 12 chromosomes: 4 green, 4 orange, and 4 yellow. Within each color, 2 of the chromosomes are from the mother; and 2 are from the father (F). Procedure: A. Get 2 chromosomes from each color (1-M and 1-F) and lay them in front of you. Q1. What stage in the life cycle would this represent? Would it be before or after āSā stage? Q2. How many chromosome pairs do you have?______Write down the all of the genes (letters on chromosomes) that this cell would have. B. Place your 6 extra chromosomes next to their exact copies so that they form 6 X shapes. Q3. What did this step represent? C. Place the chromosomes as though they are in Mitosis metaphase. Q4. Draw step C: D. Move the chromosomes as though they are going through anaphase, telophase and finally cytokinesis. Q5. How many cells are there?______ How many chromosome pairs in each?______ Name all of the genes these cells will have in cell 1? Name all of the genes these cells will have in cell 2? Q6. Are these cells the same as or different than each other? Are these cells the same as or different than the original cell in Step A? Q7. Mitosis begins with ____ _______________ cell and results in ____ _______________ cells. (1, 2, 3, 4, haploid or diploid) Meiosis A. Get 2 chromosomes from each color (1-M and 1-F) and lay them in front of you. Q1. How many chromosome pairs do you have?______Write down the all of the genes (letters on chromosomes) that this cell would have. B. Place your 6 extra chromosomes next to their exact copies so that they form 6 X shapes. Q2. What did this step represent? C. Place the chromosomes as though they are in Meiosis I metaphase. (in pairs) Q3. Draw step C: D. Move the chromosomes as though they are going through anaphase I, telophase I and cytokinesis. Q4. How many cells are there?______ How many chromosome pairs in each?______ How many different chromosomes?______ Name all of the genes cell 1 will have? Name all of the genes cell 2 will have? E. For both cells, line up the chromosomes as though they are in Meiosis II? Q5. Draw step E: F. Move the chromosomes as though they are going through anaphase II, telophase II and cytokinesis. Q6. How many cells are there?______ How many chromosome pairs in each?______ Name all of the genes these cells will have in cell 1? Cell 2? Name all of the genes these cells will have in cell 3? Cell 4? Q7. Meiosis begins with ____ _______________ cell and results in ____ _______________ cells. (1, 2, 3, 4 haploid or diploid)
