CHAPTER 1 ACTIVE READING WORKSHEETS
THE SCIENCE OF LIFE
Section 1-1: The World of Biology
Read the passage below, which covers topics from your textbook. Answer the
questions that follow.
All living things grow, as do many nonliving things. Nonliving things, such as
crystals or icicles, grow by accumulating more of the material they are made
of. Living things grow as a result of cell division and cell enlargement. Cell
division is the formation of two cells from an existing cell. In unicellular
organisms, cell division results in more organisms. Newly divided cells
enlarge until they are the size of a mature cell. In multicellular organisms,
however, organisms grow and mature through cell division, cell enlargement,
and development.
Read the question and write your answer in the space provided.
SKILL: Identifying Main Ideas
One reading skill is the ability to identify the main idea of a passage. The main idea
is the main focus or key idea. Frequently a main idea is accompanied by
supporting information that offers detailed facts about the main idea.
1. What is the main idea of the passage?

SKILL: Vocabulary Development
2. The prefix uni- means “one,” while multi- means “many.” The term nucleate
means “having a nucleus.” Use this information to define uninucleate and
multinucleate.

Circle the letter of the word or phrase that best completes the statement.
3. Growth occurs in multicellular organisms because of
a. cell division.
c. development.
b. cell enlargement. d. All of the above
