Abstract
Organismal biology (or evo-devo) aims to understand one of the most fundamental questions in biology
- how organisms evolve. Back in the On the Origin of Species, in the evolution theory of Charles Darwin,
the three major principles include natural selection, heredity, and variation. While this theory has
dominated the modern biology for more than a century, it was not until the late 1980s when comparative
molecular sequence data between different kinds of organisms were assembled and detailed; then the
understanding of molecular basis of genetic mechanisms have arisen. Our lab focus on studying four
aspects of animals - developmental biology, endocrinology, microRNAs, and genomes; and in this talk,
I will present our works on these areas to show how they can grasp a better understanding of animal
evolution.
