This portfolio is due on April 22nd, no later.
1. In household fires, it is often the smoke produced that creates a danger as great as the flames. Many plastic materials in
the house contain polyvinylchloride (PVC); the formula for this compound is (C2H3Cl)n. Write an equation for the
combustion of PVC in oxygen – no need to balance. Suggest a reason why its incineration poses a serious risk during a
fire.
2. Butan-2-ol undergoes an elimination reaction with H2SO4 as a catalyst. Suggest a method a chemist could use to
separate the elimination product from the original butan-2-ol given that some reactant will remain. Include the
condensed formulas of the reactant and products (all possible ones) as part of the reaction.
3. The structure given below is PenicillinG, an antibiotic. Circle the functional groups in the molecule and list their
corresponding names (except for the S group as we did not cover this in the course).

4. During a school laboratory test, you are given 2-pentyne and asked to prepare 2-pentanone and 3-pentanone from it.
Develop a series of reactions (and name the type of reaction) to accomplish this task.
5. Nomex is a polymer used to make flame-resistant clothing for firefighters. A portion of its structure is provided below.
Write a polymerization reaction showing its production from monomers. What type of reaction is this?
→
6. During some reactions, more than one possible product may be obtained. One is the major product and the other the
minor product. How do you decide which will be the major product? Use an example to illustrate.

7. Rank all of the hydrocarbons and hydrocarbon derivatives in Chapter 1 and rank them from high to low solubility in
water qualifying where necessary (i.e. as alcohols increase in C chain length they are less soluble) and explain the
solubility in terms of intermolecular forces.
8. For the next few questions, identify any errors in the structures/naming by drawing them, and rename them correctly
unless they don’t exist. If the compound does not exist, explain why.
