You are a scientist working on a new Cancer Treatment. This exciting new
treatment is an altered cell that is inserted into the patient and can release the
medication in a controlled manner; this will hopefully reduce some of the horrible
side effects of traditional cancer treatment.
A few problems arise while you are developing your treatment and you need to
redesign the cell that you are presently using. One of the biggest problems is that
the original cell is too large. You decide that reducing the number of organelles
would reduce the overall size of your cell. However, your new cell must be able
to maintain all its life functions.
Your objective is to design a new cell. Your cell must contain between 5-7
organelles. You may use organelles from either plant or animal cells.
1) To begin you work you need to identify and define the major organelles of both
plant and animal cells- individual work.
2) Then rank the organelles in order of importance- individual work.
3) Using this organelle ranking you will design your new cell. (Remember the cell
MUST be able to sustain life on its own.)
Working in groups of four (4), you will need to draw your new cell, label and give
a short explanation as to how each of the organelles will be able to support life
and be successful to your medication. The drawing should be on a piece of plain
white paper that is at least 8.5” x 11” or it can be draw on a computer. It must be
easy to understand and aesthetically pleasing. Extra credit of 10 points will be
given for a comprehensive 3-D model.
You must be prepared to present your cell to the board of directors.
GOOD LUCK!!!
Fill in the following charts. For REPEATS, indicate the structure
is in BOTH plants and animals, but you do not have to re-write
the function a second time. When you are done, RANK the
organelles in order of what you think is most important to least
important.
