Organelles are necessary for cells to function. Each type of organelle has an individual job that it is responsible for. In this assignment, you will take a “journey through a cell” and explain (IN YOUR OWN WORDS!!) the role of each of the organelles. Some organelles are only found in plant cells and some are only found in animal cells. You will choose either the plant or animal cell to take a tour of. You will be graded on the accuracy of your information as well as the creativity with which you use to tell your story. You may give the different organelles names and should include dialogue. You must include all of the organelles found on the rubric and in your packets we worked on in class. You also need to include a hand-drawn picture of the cell you choose to do. Your picture should include all of the organelles and they should be labeled. Be creative!! Some creative ideas are: a children’s book with pictures, a play script, or a rap. You are only required to have a written component and a labeled cell. The rest is up to you! Here is an example of a story I started… Mitch the Mitochondria Hey there! My name is Mitch. I’m not your average mitochondria. I don’t wanna brag but I produced 32 molecules of ATP about a second ago. While I’ve got you here, let me give you a tour of the cell. These are my friends Mike and Michelle. They are mitochondria like me. We are responsible for producing energy that is needed for different cellular functions. We are often called the “Mighty Mitochondria” or the powerhouses of the cell. You will find an abundance of us in cells that require more energy such as muscle cells. But lets keep moving, I’ve got a lot to show you! Be careful while we head through the cytoplasm. There are lots of organelles called lysosomes that are roaming around looking for forein particles to engulf and degrade. You wouldn’t want to bump into one of them because you don’t look like you’re from around here. Usually they are really helpful though. Las week there was a big bacterium that somehow made it through the membrane. Really scary looking fellow. Luckily my friend Lars the lysosome happened to be out and about and he degraded that sucker with his hydrolytic enzymes. I was really glad he was around. But pick up the pace, I see Lars heading this way! *Grading- Please see the rubric on the reverse side of this paper to determine what you need to include. Please DO NOT simply re-write what you wrote down for your packet that we did in class. You will not get the full amount of points for this. This assignment will be worth 35 points.
