Cells
( Think of the analogy of the factory)
Cell parts are called organelles.
Cell Membrane: membrane surrounding the cell controls what enters and exits the cell.
( security)
Cytoplasm: fluid like substance that supports organelles. ( building)
Nucleus: control center of a cell. Stores specific information such as DNA. ( boss)
Nuclear Membrane: allows substances to enter/exit the nucleus. ( office)
Ribosome: synthesize ( build ) proteins. ( machines, workers)
Nucleolus: synthesize ( build) ribosome. ( mechanic)
Lysosome: contains digestive enzymes to breakdown materials. ( janitor uses Lysol)
Vacuole: membrane enclosed sacs that store materials ( storage)
a) Food vacuole
b) Contractile vacuole- pumps excess water out
Mitochondria: powerhouse of the cells ( cell respiration) ( energy)
Golgi Complex: prepares and packages materials for storage and secretion. ( packaging
machine)
Endoplasmic Reticulum: interconnecting channels that transport and store
substances.(stock boy, forklift)
a) rough er: has ribosome
b) smooth er: no ribosome
**Nucleolus builds ribosomes which build proteins.
Differences between Plant and Animal Cells





PLANT
chloroplasts
large vacuoles
rectangular or square
cell wall
chlorophyll ( green pigment)
ANIMAL
centrioles ( help with cell division)
small vacuoles
circular
Chloroplasts: contain chlorophyll, givers plants green color; photosynthesis
occur here.
Photosynthesis: process by which green plants manufacture their own food.
Plants use the energy from the sun to make glucose.
Cell wall: provides structure and support for the cells. Every cell has its own cell
wall. The cell wall is like the skeleton around every single cell.
What is the relationship between cells and living things?
All living things are made up of cells.

I
Cell Theory: cells come from pre-existing cells
Cells are the basic unit of structure and function of all living things.
II
Exceptions:
The first cell did not come from a cell.
Viruses have DNA and replicate but are not cells.
Chloroplasts and mitochondria have DNA and replicate but they are not cells.
