As you can see, there are many new topics and vocabulary words to learn in this unit. Please remind your
child to be reviewing notes each night. Read one time through – don’t try to memorize. If something
does not make sense come to class and ask for clarification – DON’T wait until a test to say you don’t
understand something!
The vocabulary list is attached to this letter. As new words are discussed in class, students should match
the correct word with the appropriate definition. The vocabulary test will be on 12/06/11. It will be
cumulative over units 1-4. Students may use Quizlet to study! Directions are on my website. The Unit 4
Test will be on 11/22/11. The Semester Exam will be on 12/13/11.

Unit 4 Vocabulary
name: ____________________
1. ____________________segments of DNA, located on chromosomes, that carry the
heredity instructions that are passed from parent to offspring
2. _____________________the process of producing energy (ATP) in the cell from oxygen
and glucose; produces carbon dioxide and water
3. ____________________division of the nucleus in eukaryotic cells in which each new
cell receives a copy of the original chromosomes
4. ____________________the green pigment in chloroplasts where photosynthesis occurs
5. _____________________the physical expression of the inherited combination of alleles
(could be brown or blue…)
6. ____________________a tool scientist use to predict all of the possible combinations of
alleles that offspring can inherit from 2 parents
7. ____________________hereditary material found in the nucleus of a cell that controls all
the activities of the cell
8. ____________________the inherited combination of alleles (could be BB, Bb or bb)
9. ____________________the process by which a plant takes in carbon dioxide and water
and in the presence of sunlight makes sugar and oxygen
10. ____________________nuclear division that produces sex cells
11. ____________________describes the organism or trait that has two identical alleles for
the same trait(BB)
12. ____________________a structure that surrounds the cell membrane of plant cells, it
provides strength and support
13. ____________________ the passing of traits from parent to offspring
14. ____________________ a coiled structure of DNA and protein that forms in the cell
nucleus during cell division
15. ____________________describes the organism or trait that has two different alleles for
the same trait(Bb)
16. ____________________the simple cell division in which one cell splits into 2; asexual
reproduction
17. ___________________different forms of the same gene
18. ____________________complex, multi-cellular autotrophic organisms that are usually
green and use photosynthesis to make sugar
