HUMAN HEREDITY BIOLOGY 328 Spring 2007 Instructor: Suzanne Hizer Contact Information: (760) 750-4032 E-mail: [email protected] Office Hours and location: Tuesdays 10:30-11:30 AM, Science Hall 1, room 309, or by appointment Course Objective: Provide a solid foundation in human genetics with emphasis on critical thinking skills. Develop skills and a theoretical understanding of important concepts related to hereditary. Text REQUIRED: Human Genetics: Concepts and Applications. Ricki Lewis, 7th edition, McGraw-Hill. Available at the bookstore. Grading Schematic: Your grade in this course will consist of four quizzes (10 points each) and two exams (80 points each). You will undertake two writing assignments worth 30 points each. These will be based on journal articles and/or video presentations. Attendance is mandatory and attendance will be taken. 4 quizzes (10 points each) 2 exams (80 points each) 2 writing assignments (30 points each) TOTAL Extra credit-in class participation and attendance 40 points 160 points 60 points 260 points 25 points Special needs: A student with a verified disability may be entitled to appropriate academic accommodations. Please contact me ASAP and/or the Disabled Student Services office in Craven Hall 5205, ext. 4905, for further assistance. Course goals and requirements: This course is designed for students to gain a fundamental understanding of human genetics. Genetics is the study of inherited traits and their variation. We will explore all aspects of genetics, including DNA, genes, chromosomes, and genomes. We will examine genetics from the perspective of individuals, family, populations and in evolution. Finally, we will discuss topics such as genetics in forensics, behavior and the technologies being used for future genetics discoveries. Learning Outcomes: Students will understand the basic unit of heredity, heredity patterns and pedigrees, population genetic principles, genetic technologies and the ethical considerations surrounding these advancements. Academic Honesty: Cheating of any form, including plagiarism will result in an “F” on the assignment and could result in an “F” in the course and expulsion from the class.
