Cell City / Inspiration Lab

Introduction:
Structure and function are related. This is true of the city you live in, and the
cells that make you a living organism. Without our rigid skeletal system,
we’d be a blob on the floor. Without our elastic muscular system, we
wouldn’t be able to move, digest our food, or circulate our blood.
City roads and railway tracks provide transportation. You couldn’t shop,
visit friends and family, or attend school without adequate transportation
systems. Our bodies have transportation systems too. Each cell in our body
has a transportation system. City dumps provide a place to store waste. Our
bodies and all living cells must remove wastes as well. Supermarkets and
restaurants provide food. Our bodies need food and so do all cells. Cells, or
bodies, or cities can’t thrive unless they can perform all the functions needed
to sustain life.
Purpose:
In this exercise, you will discover the functions of various cell organelles in
life processes. You will then design a city based on the functions of cell
organelles. Each organelle will represent a corresponding part of a city.
Procedure:
1. Complete the Cell Part / City Part Chart and show it to your
instructor for approval.
2. Use the software program Inspiration to design your city.
3. Each organelle/ part of city must be labeled with reference to both
the organelle and city structure being represented. EX: Austen
Nucleus City Hall or City Hall Anytown (nucleus).
4. Be sure all organelles are used. Graphics and clip arts are nice but
the organelle/structure relationship is the one to concentrate on.
