Objectives
• To be able to describe the features/structures
of specialised cells, and explain how they are
related to their function
– Egg cell
– Sperm cell
– Ciliated epithelial cell
Task: learning about specialised cells:
Use the worksheet to draw a diagram of each type of
cell, labelling the key features. Add detail to explain
the function of each feature:
a) sperm cells – acrosome, haploid nucleus,
mitochondria and tail
b) egg cells – nutrients in the cytoplasm, haploid
nucleus
c) ciliated epithelial cells – cilia
Extension: Explain the following:
1. What the term ‘haploid nucleus’ means and why it
is important that sperm and egg cells are haploid
2. What happens to the egg cell membrane after a
sperm enters
