Cell Reproduction
Vocabulary List 5
54. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the molecule that
contains information for how an organism grows and
functions.
55. Chromosomes are structures made of DNA and found
in the nucleus of the cell.
56. Cell division is the process by which cells reproduce.
57. Mitosis is the process where the nucleus divides its
DNA just before cell division.
58. When a chromosome is copied, each twin is called a
chromatid.
59. Binary Fission is cell division in bacteria.
60. Budding occurs when a small part of a cell breaks off
to form a new organism. The parent cell is larger than
the new cell. (ex. Hydra, yeast)
61. Regeneration is the process that uses cell division to
re-grow body parts (ex. Sea sponges, sea stars)
62. Meiosis is the process that creates sex cells. Sex cells
have half the parent’s DNA.
63. Gametes are sex cells (sperm and egg)
64. Fertilization is the process where sperm and egg
meet.
65. Zygote is a fertilized egg cell.
