Name___________________________ Each of your cells is a miniature marvel. Consider taking a complex machine with millions of parts—say a jumbo jet—and shrinking it to microscopic size while keeping everything in working order. It would still seem simple compared to a living cell. Everything you do, every action and every thought, reflects processes occurring at the cellular level. Just as your body has organs, such as a kidney, heart and skin, each part of a cell has organelles, with specific jobs to do in the cell to perform life functions. There are two basic kinds of cells. One kind—, a eukaryotic cell (yoo KAR ee oh tik) has a nucleus storing DNA and surrounded by its own membrane, and has other internal organelles bounded by membranes.. Protists, fungi, plants, and animals consist of eukaryotic cells. In contrast a prokaryotic cell (pro KAR ee oh tik)— lacks a nucleus and most other organelles. Bacteria and another group of organisms called the archaea are prokaryotic cells. All living cells carry DNA, but prokaryotes do not house their DNA in a membrane bound nucleus. Prokaryotic organisms appear earliest in Earth's fossil record. Organisms with eukaryotic cells appeared later in Earth's history. Bacteria cells and other prokaryotic cells are smaller than eukaryotic cells. Since eukaryotic cells have many different organelles to produce and move very small molecules of life, they can be larger. 1. What is an organelle? 2. What is the difference between a prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell? 3. Which type of cell is more complex? 4. What are two types of prokaryotes? 5. Are the cells in your body eukaryotic or prokaryotic cells? 6. Label which cell below is a prokaryote and which is a eukaryote
