Adaptation and mitigation strategies will be identified in collaboration with regional stakeholders. • Duration: 2007 - 2010 • http://www.circeproject.eu Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies: Supporting European Climate Policy ADAM Project • The project will lead to a better understanding of the synergies, trade-offs and conflicts that exist between adaptation and mitigation policies at multiple scales. ADAM will support EU policy development in the next stage of the development of the Kyoto Protocol, in particular negotiations around a post-2012 global climate policy regime, and will inform the emergence of new adaptation strategies for Europe. • Duration: 2006 - 2008 • http://www.adamproject.eu More Information on FP6 Climate Change Research Projects …. Food Agriculture Fisheries and Biotechnology Objective: Building a European Knowledge Based Bio-Economy by bringing together science, industry and other stakeholders, to exploit new and emerging research opportunities that address social, environmental and economic challenges: the growing demand for safer, healthier, higher quality food and for sustainable use and production of renewable bio-resources, the increasing risk of epizootic and zoonotic diseases and food related disorders; threats to the sustainability and security of agricultural, aquaculture and fisheries production; and the increasing demand for high quality food, taking into account animal welfare and rural and coastal context and response to specific dietary needs of consumers. Key Activities - Sustainable production and management of biological resources from land, forest and aquatic environments (1st CALL: development of ‘climate proof’ food crops; novel forest breeding to improve adaptation to climate change) - Fork to farm: Food (including seafood), health and well being - Life Sciences, biotechnology and biochemistry for sustainable non-food, products and processes 5. Energy Objective: Adapting the current energy system into a more sustainable one, less dependent on imported fuels based on a diverse mix of energy sources, in particular renewables, energy carriers and non-polluting sources; enhancing energy efficiency, including by rationalising use and storage of energy; addressing the pressing challenges of security of supply and climate change, whilst increasing the competitiveness of Europe's industries. Key Activities - Hydrogen and fuel cells Renewable electricity generation Renewable fuel production (1st CALL: first and second generation biofuels from biomass ; biodiesel from oil crops) - Renewables for heating and cooling CO2 capture and storage technologies for zero emission generation Clean coal technologies Smart energy networks Energy efficiency and savings Knowledge for Energy policy-making 6. Environment (including Climate Change) Objective: Sustainable management of the environment and its resource through advancing our knowledge of the interactions between the climate, biosphere, ecosystems and human activities, and developing new technologies, tools and services, in order to address in an integrated way global environmental issues. Emphasis will be put on prediction of climate, ecological, earth and ocean systems changes, on tools and on technologies for monitoring, prevention, mitigation of and adaptation to environmental pressures and risks including on health, as well as for the sustainability of the natural and man-made environment. Key Activities - Climate change, pollution and risks Sustainable management of resources Environmental Technologies Earth Observation and assessment tools for sustainable development 7. Transport Objective: Based on technological and operational advances and on the European transport policy, develop integrated, safer, ‘greener’ and ‘smarter’ pan-European transport systems for the benefit of all citizens, and society and climate policy, respecting the environment and natural resources; and securing and further developing the competitiveness attained by the European industries in the global market. Key Activities - Aeronautics and Air transport - Sustainable surface transport (rail, road and waterborne) (1st CALL: Greening of surface transport to reduce its impact on climate change, health, pollution) - Support for the European global satellite system (Galileo and EGNOS) 8. Socio-economic Sciences and the Humanities Objective: Generating an in-depth, shared understanding of complex and interrelated socio-economic challenges Europe is confronted with, such as growth, employment and competitiveness, social cohesion, social, cultural and educational challenges in an enlarged EU, sustainability, environmental challenges, demographic change, migration and integration, quality of life and global interdependence, in particular with the view of providing an improved knowledge base for policies in the fields concerned. Key Activities - Growth employment and competitiveness in a knowledge society Combining economic, social and environmental objectives in a European perspective (1st CALL: socioeconomic factors and actors shaping the ‘post-carbon’ society) - Major trends in society and their application Europe in the world The citizen in the European Union Socioeconomic and scientific indicators Foresight activities 9. Space Objective: Supporting a European Space Programme focusing on applications such as the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) with benefits for citizens and for the competitiveness of the European space industry. This will contribute to the development of a European space policy, complementing efforts by Member States and by other key players, including the European Space Agency (ESA). Key Activities - Space-based applications at the service of European Society (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security, GMES) (1st CALL: pre-operational validation of GMES services and products) - RTD for strengthening space foundations - Space exploration - Space sciences 6.
