Class Objective
1. Students know the fundamentals on
learning psychology
2. Students know what is perception
psychology and it’s role on the design
field
3. Students are aware the underlying
factors that defines them

What is Psychology?
“The science of behavior learning and the
underlying natural mental processes inside
a contextual situation”

Everything we think, say, or do is influence by where we
came from, the people we interact with, what has
happened to us in the past, and what we think might
happened to us in the future

Why learn psychology?
1. Know the basic knowledge needed to learn about
human behavior
2. Can help you to develop your thinking skills and find
out new ways on human behavior
3. Learn and develop to better yourself

Difference between Sensation and Perception
Factors that influence perceptions
Cognitive Process
Visual Communication Design, Universitas Ciputra, 2010
What is Perception Psychology?
The brain’s process of organizing and
interpreting sensory information
and give it meaning
Visual Communication Design, Universitas Ciputra, 2010
What is Sensation?
• Sensation is a physiology function and depend
mostly on maturity and sensory organs function
• Sensation includes audio-visual function,
smelling, hearing and touch, balance and
movement control. We called this our senses.
Visual Communication Design, Universitas Ciputra, 2010
Factor that influence Perception
The Dominant factor is the expectancy of the
information takers. This gives structure in our
mind as a perceptual set or mental set.
This in turn is influence by:
• Information availability
• Needs
• Past experiences
Visual Communication Design, Universitas Ciputra, 2010
Cognitive Process
• Thinking
The manipulation of mental representations of information
• Memory
Memory is the retention of information over time.
there are 3 kind of memory depending on how long the memory
stays in focus
• Intelligence
The ability to solve problems, to learn, to create and forming
conclusion
Visual Communication Design, Universitas Ciputra, 2010
Memory types based on retention
• Sensory memory
memory bits from our sensory is automatically
stored
• Short term memory
also coined as working memory, this is where
information is received and processed
• Long-term memory
Keeps a lot of information over a long period of
time.
