Cancer Research Project Due 2/21/17 Directions: 1. You will choose a gene that has been demonstrated to contribute to the development of cancer in humans. 2. Research this gene. 3. Create a 1 page written document that answers each of the following questions: 1. Is the gene a proto-oncogene, tumor suppressor, DNA repair enzyme, or something else (tell me what it is, don’t just say “something else”)? 2. What does the normal (functional) version of the gene do in the cell? 3. What does the mutated version of the gene do that contributes to cancer? 4. What cancers is the mutated version of the gene associated with? 5. What are the symptoms and physiological problems of this cancer? 6. What signaling pathway is this gene involved in? 7. What current treatments are available or under investigation regarding this type of oncogene (or the cancer it causes). 4. Along with the answers to these questions, you should feel free to include as many as three images that you feel are relevant to your explanation. Make sure to label each image, explaining why you felt they should be included. 5. Please include APA formatted citations for your sources on a separate sheet of paper. Cancer Genes: YOU MAY WORK WITH ONE PARTNER or WORK ALONE. You may also opt for a gene of interest that is not listed below. 1. RB 2. p53 3. APC 4. BRCA1 5. BRCA2 6. ras 7. MYC 8. RAF 9. TRK10. Mismatch repair 1 (on chromosome 3) 11. Mismatch repair 2 (on chromosome 2) 12. Phtolyases 13. BCR-able –
