Aims
Thismoduleintroducesstudentstothebasicstructureandfunctionofprokaryoticandeukaryoticcells
andcellorganelles,biologicallyimportantmacromoleculesandassemblies,thediversityandubiquity
of microorganisms, and different types of metabolism exhibited by microbes. The students will
understandtheimportanceofcellularorganizationandcompartmentalization,andthesignificanceof
molecularinteractionsintheconstructionandmaintenanceoflivingthings.Themodulewilldiscussthe
generalprinciplesofmicrobiologywhichgreatlyinfluencemanyotherareasofbiology,medicine,public
healthandnature.
