Name _____________________________ Per _______ Date ____________ Construction of a cell Each student is responsible for the construction of a model of a plant or animal cell. The internal organelles must be depicted in 3-D and the materials that you choose for each must be related to their function or structure or shape or size or location. The entire model may be 3-D or you may use a poster board for the cell outline and then use different 3-D materials. Along with the model, you must complete the following chart that explains the structure and function of each organelle and what could be used to portray it, and WHY!! In other words, what you use for each organelle must make sense considering the structure and function of that organelle. Please note that there are a different number of organelles in animal or plant cells – its up to you which kind of cell you make but put the correct organelles into whichever cell you make. Even if you didn’t include the organelle in your cell you should fill out information in the chart. You can still earn points for telling about WHAT they do and what you WOULD use to represent them. The majority of your grade is determined by the effort you put into this chart. Empty boxes = zero points!!!!!!!! Here’s an example of a full points chart entry: Cell Membrane Structure/Location: Surrounds whole cell Holds in cell contents Double layer of lipids/proteins Function: Defines what’s in/out Controls in/out I used: Layer of paint around entire outside of cell Because: The paint can go all around the cell. You would earn 3 points for the 3 facts about the Structure/Location, 2 points for the 2 facts about the Function, and 2 points for explaining what you used and why. There are a possible 3 points for the structure/location information, 2 points for the function, and two points for what you used and why for each organelle so there is a possible 7 points per cell part. In addition, you’ll earn points for your class presentation, and the neatness and creativity you put into your work. You will present your model to the class on _____________. You will show the class your cell and then must be prepared to explain 2 of the organelles to the class – one that I pick at random and one of your choice. This is a SHORT presentation – explaining the structure and function and what you used for the organelles and WHY. This project should not cost your family lots of money or aggravation. Have fun thinking about the various household items you can use to represent the different parts of a cell. Artistic skill is not what is important here. What is important is the thought and creativity you put into representing a cell and its organelles.
