5th and 6th grade Ch. 3 test Notes:
Part A MC
I) Characteristics – Determined by
A) Heredity – inherited traits – passed on from parents –ability to do it
B) Learned Traits What is taught? –Athletic Performance Education
C) Environment
II) Asexual Reproduction
A) Mitosis
B) Budding (Growth from sides of organism)
C) Spore Formation (Mushrooms)
D) Body Parts: Sea Stars
III) DNA
A) Tells the kind of organisms
B) No relationship between size of organisms and its DNA Size
C) In unzipped DNA – Base Pairs separate
D) Human Genome – mapping all the genes in Chromosomes
IV) Sexual reproduction
A) Meiosis – forms sex cells
.
B) Fertilization forms a Zygote, Occurs in the Ovules (Plants)
V) Traits
A) Dominant trumps one recessive gene
B) Recessive needs two genes to dominant
C) You need to read a Punnett Square
D) One Dominant and one recessive gene equals a hybrid trait.
Part B Short Answer
1. Answer questions based on a chart of Body Cell Chromosomes number. Remember
that sex cells have ½ of the number of body cells.
2 Why are there generally more egg and sperm cells produced during external
fertilization than in internal fertilization? – Remember external fertilization is not as
protected, unfavorable environment, and many never become fertilized.
3. Give two reasons why people use selective breeding to change characteristics of plants.
(Larger, better tasting or looking, resistant to drought or pests)
4. Compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of sexual and asexual
reproduction. See page 67 for help here.
