Daniel Nathans & Werner Arber use restriction enzymes to generate the first physical map of a chromosome. BERG, GILBERT, MAXAM & SANGER 1977 -- working separately, each develop techniques for rapidly ‘spelling out” long sections of DNA by determining the sequence of bases.
