RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Our research is focused on the function and plasticity of distributed, brainstem neural networks
involved in cardiorespiratory control. Behaviors of interest include the production of airway
protective reflexes such as cough and swallow as well as responses to hypoxia, hyper- and hypocapnia, and lung inflation. Our methods include extracellular spike train recording in vivo,
computer assisted data entry and analysis (statistical measurement of cardiorespiratory
modulation, cycle triggered histograms, cross correlograms, spike triggered average histograms,
and the gravity method) and computer simulations of neural networks inferred from in vivo data.
TEACHING:
To paraphrase one of our greatest teachers, Isaac Asimov, the contribution I can make in research
is limited to the contribution of one, the contribution I make as a teacher is that of thousands. The
separation of research, reporting and teaching is an artificial construct; it is all a continuum. The
teaching part of science is just as important as the research. My goal in teaching medical and
graduate students, beyond conveying the basic necessary information, is to foster a habit of
critical thinking. I want students to question assumptions, to make mental models of every
problem and to independently integrate form and function; to observe, generalize, then formulate
and test hypotheses. I think these traits are just as important in the practice of medicine as they
are in research.

Computational Studies of the Respiratory Brainstem
This collaborative project brings together researchers in five states to simulate populations of
respiratory neurons with realistic biophysical properties and computationally efficient large-scale
simulations. Simulations are being used to integrate current knowledge, provide a framework to test
and predict the consequences of defined perturbations, and generate testable hypotheses. Associated in
vivo and in vitro neurophysiological and pharmacological experiments will test model-based
hypotheses on sub-cellular, cellular, network and systems level mechanisms that transform the
respiratory network during the transitions from eupnea to gasping and during sleep and waking.
