A. Personal Statement
As a Surgical Oncologist with a clinical focus on gastrointestinal tumors, I will use my expertise in the natural
history and clinical management of gastric and colorectal cancers to facilitate this project examining pathways
of chronic inflammation and their relation to the development of these malignancies. While there is a clear
clinical link between conditions causing chronic inflammation and certain cancers (H. pylori infection and
gastric adenocarcinoma, inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer), the molecular mechanisms by
which this occurs have not been fully elucidated. As an Assistant Professor recently recruited to UNM, I have
actively sought collaborations with promising scientists such as Dr. Beswick in an effort to further this type of
clinically relevant research which is critically necessary to rapidly translate laboratory based scientific
observations into new treatment options for patients.
I am particularly interested in this project as findings regarding the mechanisms by which chronic inflammation
can influence gastrointestinal tumors such as gastric and colorectal cancer may also have applicability to the
development of other inflammation related GI cancers such as gallbladder cancer and cholangiocarcinoma,
potentially leading to new screening and treatment options for all these tumors which, combined, represent a
significant public health concern.

Legacy Health System Tumor Bank.
The goal of this project was to establish a prospectively maintained collection of tumor tissue with ongoing
patient status updates. Confidentiality is assured by a code number linkage which is stored in our secure
Cancer Registry. The tissue is used for translational research and all participating patients give informed
consent. This project is ongoing under another PI since my departure.
