COMPARISON OF P53 EXPRESSION IN HPV(+) AND HPV(-) IN
CONJUNCTIVAL AND EYELID SQUAMOUS NEOPLASIA
Author :
Abstract :
Purpose :To compare the expression of p53 in HPV(+) and HPV (-) in neoplasia squamous cell of
the eyelid and ocular surface. Design: A consecutive retrospective comparative study. Methods:
All samples were taken from the paraffin block of squamous cell neoplasia that arouse on the
eyelid and ocular surface that were operated between 2000-2007 in Sardjito General Hospital
and Yap Eye Hospital. All samples were deparaffinized and cut in slices. Then it was stained
using DO-7 humanized monoclonal antibody to observe the expression of p53 and the presence
of HPV was detected by mouse monoclonal antibody K1H8 staining. Result: There were 15
samples that were included in this study. Seven samples were taken from the eyelid and 8
samples were taken from conjunctiva or fornix. Seven samples were HPV(+), and the mean
expression of p53 was 29.7. Four of them were eyelid tumors and 3 of them were conjunctival
tumors. Eight samples were HPV(-) and the mean expression of p53 was 26.5, three of them
were eyelid tumors, and 5 were conjunctival tumors. The difference of p53 expression between
the two groups was 3.24 with p value=0.791. Conclusion: The roles of p53 gene and HPV are
important factors to be considered, regarding the malignancy and high recurrence rate of
squamous cell neoplasia in eyelid and ocular surface. It is hoped that in the future there will be
vaccine that can prevent the development of squamous cell neoplasia in high risk individuals.
