THE NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN DNA BANK ACQUISITIONS POLICY The DNA Bank of The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) serves as the repository for samples of frozen tissue and genomic DNA for research conducted in the Garden’s molecular systematics and genomics laboratories by scientists, graduate students, visiting scholars, and interns. In support of the Garden’s mission to document biodiversity, the aim of the DNA Bank is to house samples in plant and fungal groups studied by Garden scientists, as well as other taxa from the diverse geographic regions in which our staff works. The DNA Bank will accept existing collections from other institutions and individuals provided that they are relevant to and consistent with our goals, acquisition policy, and provided that a voucher specimen is deposited in an herbarium with an active loan program, preferably the William and Lynda Steere Herbarium of NYBG. Any herbarium specimen obtained this way that is duplicated in the NYBG herbarium will be dispersed to another interested herbarium. Please contact Lisa M. Campbell, Plant Research Laboratory, The New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY 10458 ([email protected]) prior to sending any specimens. Specimens deposited in the DNA Bank must have been collected with the agreement of and according to the laws of the host state or country as well as those of the USA. It is the responsibility of collectors to obtain all necessary permits before collecting, to leave duplicates of voucher herbarium specimens in local herbaria, to send labels for their collections and subsequent determinations of their collections to host herbaria in a timely fashion, and to send reprints of publications based—even in part—on fieldwork in host countries, to host herbaria and botanists. Copies of field data, or of voucher specimen labels must accompany specimens deposited in the DNA Bank. Specimens of species listed in the CITES Appendices will be accepted only from institutions that have registered with CITES and received a scientific institution number and have a current Certificate of Scientific Exchange. Appendices of regulated taxa are available at: http://www.cites.org/eng/resources/species.html.
