REQUEST FOR PERMISSION TO REMOVE SAMPLES FROM HERBARIUM SPECIMENS FOR
DNA EXTRACTION
Any specimen samples released are subject to the terms of a Material Transfer Agreement (to be signed by the researcher
if permission for removal is granted) and the Destructive Sampling Policy.
To request permission to remove samples from herbarium specimens:
1. Please provide:
 Your name and email address; name of the institution where you work and nature of your affiliation there.
 If you already have a loan, the NY Loan Number of the material you wish to sample.
 If you are a student, the name and email address of your advisor.
2. Please verify that you have checked for suitable samples or data at websites such as:
 GenBank (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/genbank/)
 EMBL (http://www.ebi.ac.uk/services)
 Missouri Botanical Garden DNA bank (http://www.wlbcenter.org/dna_banking.htm)
 The New York Botanical Garden DNA bank (http://www.nybg.org/science/dna-bank.php)
3. Provide a brief summary of the study for which the samples are wanted, including:
 Nature and scientific rationale of the study
 Taxa involved
 Techniques employed
 Previous experience with obtaining useful DNA from herbarium specimens of the study group
 Number of specimens to be sampled and the amount of material required
 Roles and credentials of research participants
4. Provide a list of the specimens you wish to sample, preferably in spreadsheet format, including:
 Family name
 Taxon name
 Country
 Collector’s name
 Collection number
 Barcode on NY specimen.
If you find specimens of interest to you by searching our Virtual Herbarium catalogues
(http://sciweb.nybg.org/science2/vii2.asp.html), check off the specimens to be sampled and then download in csv format.
You can submit this spreadsheet, or one you created, with your request for sampling permission.
Please add your name and date to the top of the spreadsheet.
5. Please send this information to the Director of the Herbarium, The New York Botanical Garden, 2900 Southern Blvd.,
Bronx, NY 10458-5126 USA; or
email the documents to the Phanerogamic herbarium ([email protected] or [email protected]) or to the Cryptogamic
herbarium ([email protected]) as appropriate.
