ECNP Research Internship
Bill Deakin
University of Manchester, Manchester, United Kingdom
The Neuroscience and Psychiatry Unit aims to understand the neurobiology of common mental illness
and new principles of treatment using neuroimaging together with cognitive and drug challenges. We
will tailor the research training experiences to the individual needs of the ECNP visiting scientist.
Current projects involve proton MRS (glutamate, GABA glutathione) and the unique development of
C13glucose MRS to measure glutamate neuronal synthesis. Resting state and cognitive challenge fMRI
is in use. FDOPA PET assesses dopamine neuronal function and PK11195 assesses microglial activation
in patients with recent onset psychosis. Clinical and imaging data will be available from a clinical trial of
minocycline vs placebo in first episode schizophrenia. There are several other datasets available for
exploratory analyses. Bill Deakin works with senior staff Rebecca Elliott (cognitive neuroscience &
emotion), Ian Anderson (psychiatry and depression) and Shane Mckie (image analysis). There is a
friendly crew of post docs and PhD students. Manchester is seriously cool city.
