Course Title: BIOL 3414- Molecular Cell Biology
Text: The Cell: A Molecular Approach
Author: Geoffrey Cooper
Course Content: This course provides an integrated approach to study the
molecular perspective of cell biology.
Our purpose is three-fold:
1. to understand how gene expression occurs so that cells synthesize the
right proteins at the right time in the right amounts;
2. to know the structure and function of proteins that carry out specific
biologically important tasks; for example, proteins that regulate the cell
cycle, that organize chromatin, that mediate transport, or send or receive
chemical signals; and
3. to understand how properties of cells relate to the properties of the
proteins and other molecules they contain.
Expected Outcomes:
1. to learn the fundamental concepts in molecular cell biology
2. to apply concepts you’ve learned
3. to extrapolate information and facts from what you already know
4. to communicate your understanding of molecular cell biology effectively
5. to appreciate the application of molecular cell biology to modern medicine
