The genes responsible for certain diseases are well known. For example,
oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy, a disease common among French Canadians, is
caused by mutations in the PABPN1 gene. However, the cellular function of PABPN1
remains poorly understood, impeding our understanding of the molecular basis of this
disease. In recent years, we have used the most advanced methods in molecular
biology, genomics and proteomics to better understand the function of PABPN1 and
some other proteins involved in certain cancers.
The Bachand lab specializes in molecular and cellular biology and consists of ~10 people,
including graduate students and research assistants. Several projects will be offered to
the selected candidate and the final choice of the project will depend on the candidate's
interests and progress of the laboratory. The trainee will therefore conduct his own
research project.
