The purpose of digestion is to do what? Break down large molecules into smaller molecules that the body can use as energy. Can chewing food break down molecules? No, molecules are ONLY broken down by chemical changes such as saliva and gastric acid. Chewing is a physical change and only breaks food into smaller pieces not molecules. What process breaks down carbohydrates into simple sugars? Digestion How can you support/prove the statement, “Digestion produces chemical changes?” Digestion produces new substances, i.e. bile, chyme, urine & feces. What are some common facts about organic compounds? They must contain Carbon and at least one of the HOPNS. They come from living things. What is one example of an organic compound? Inorganic? CH4; H2O What are the 3 rules of the Cell Theory? All living organisms are composed of one or more cells. The cell is the most basic unit of life. All cells arise from preexisting, living cells. What are the 4 main differences of a plant cell compared to an animal cell? Plant cells are boxlike in shape, have extra organelles, a cell wall and chloroplasts, they also have a large central vacuole. Why do plant cells need chloroplasts? In order to photosynthesize, which is how they make their food (glucose/sugar). Why do plant cells need a large vacuole? They must store water in times of drought. What organelle is most like the human brain? Why? Nucleus, b/c it controls all cell functions. What are the 5 levels of organization from least to most complex? Cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism. How is does an animal cell compare to a fish? An animal cell is the building block of the fish. How do you calculate Work? W=Fxd Why do astronauts have to use a 2 way radio to communicate with each other when they are outside of the space shuttle and wearing their space suits? Because there is no air in space in which sound waves to travel. What are the 3 requirements a planet must have in order for life to exist? Good temperatures (proximity to the Sun), liquid water and an atmosphere. What is the only body system that can carry things, such as nutrients and gasses around your body? Circulatory system What systems are a part of the excretory system because they excrete waste? Respiratory, Digestive, and Integumentary (some may mention urinary). The endocrine system sends signals to other body systems causing changes. What does it use to send these signals? Hormones What system sends electrical signals to the body to coordinate the body’s actions? Nervous What is stimulus and response? The body’s way of reacting to internal and external changes… cause and effect. Increased hunger is a response to what external stimulus? Smelling food or seeing food. What body systems are responsible for you jerking your hand back from something hot? Nervous and Muscular Is shivering a response or stimulus? Response. To an exteral or internal stimulus? Exteral (the cold is outside of the body). What does the excretory system do with blood? Filters out waste products from the blood through the kidneys. What are the energy changes in digestion? Chemical (food) is transformed into thermal energy (body heat) and into mechanical energy (organism’s movement). After eating, do you think an organism’s temperature increases or decreases? Why does it do this? Increases, because the chemical bonds in the food are being broken which releases heat energy. Why does a cracker begin to taste sweet, if left in your mouth? The salivary enzymes break down the large carbohydrates into smaller sugar molecules… first step in chemical digestion. What is the primary source of energy for all life? The Sun
