Structure of Plant and Animal Cells 1) Which organelles are present in only plant cells?
The cell wall, chloroplasts and the central vacuole are present only in plant cells.
2) Which organelles are present in only animal cells?
Centrioles are only found in animal cells.
3) Which organelles are present in both types of cell? Why do you think this is? Refer specifically to several organelles in you explanation.
Mitochondria, vacuoles, cytoplasm, a cell membrane, a cytoskeleton, and a nucleus can be found in both plant and animal cells. Many of these play essential roles in the cells. The mitochondria produce the energy that cells need to carry out life processes. The cell membrane is what separates a cell from it's environment. The nucleus is important to both types of cells because it is the control centre of the cell. Note that some simple cells, such as bacteria, do not have a nucleus. Their genetic material floats in the cytoplasm. Such cells are called prokaryotes. All plant and animal cells are eukaryotes, because they have a nucleus.
4) Explain which organelles are involved with the energy needs of plant cells. Animal cells? How do they work together?
In plants, energy is capture from sunlight and stored as sugar by the chloroplasts. This sugar is then used by the mitochondria to produce energy that can be used by the plant's cells. Animals also have mitochondria that produce energy in a chemical reaction involving glucose and oxygen. Because animals do not produce their own glucose, they must obtain it from their environment. Glucose enters the cell through the cell membrane. 5) Explain which organelles are involved with transportation in cells, and what their roles are.
The vacuoles of plant and animal cells are involved in transporting molecules in the cells. The filaments and tubules of the cytoskeleton act like tracks for the cell's organelles to move along. The cell membrane is involved with transporting materials in and out of the cell.

6) Describe and compare what parts of the cells are involved with the structure of plant cells and the structure of animal cells. Comment how their overall structure would compare.
For both animal and plant cells, the cell membrane surrounds the cell and the filament and tubules of the cytoskeleton give structure to the cytoplasm. Plant cells are given a more rigid structure than animal cells by the cell wall. Plant cell are also supported by the turgor pressure created by the central vacuole.
7) Find the three organelles on pp.12­13 of your text which are not described. Place them in the correct columns (Plant cells/ Animal cells), label them on the diagram and record their descriptions in the space below.
