You have been given a special top-secret mission. Because of your extensive knowledge of protein synthesis you have been summoned by the man himself, Mr. Austin Powers, to serve on the bomb squad. You job is to gain revenge on Dr. Evil, through the utilization of the universe’s most powerful stink bomb. You will be labeling the parts of the cell or the parts of protein synthesis in the parenthesis to help us figure out the mysterious ingredients. Use the following words (some are used twice as indicated with a “x 2”): DNA, nucleus x 2, tRNA x 2, mRNA, transcription, nuclear pore, codon x 2, anticodon, stop codon, amino acid(s) x 2, protein, cytoplasm x2, ribosome, & translation The bomb plans (______________________) have to be kept in a safe (________________________) on an island. Because they could be lost and these PLANS, the only copy known to exist, are too valuable to be lost. So instead of taking the plans from the safe (_____________________) you send a messenger (__________________________) to retrieve the bomb plans. You do not want to take any chances of being caught by the enemy (Dr. Evil), so instead of having the messenger simply retrieve the plans you tell the messenger to rewrite (____________________________) the plans in to a code (_____________________________). Once the messenger is done he/she will slip out through a secret tunnel in the safe (_________________________) and into the ocean (_________________________). Once in the ocean (_________________) you will need to find the underwater bomb making factory (______________). There you can decipher the code (________________________). To do this you hire a translator (____________________________) to read the code and figure out the right ingredients for the feared STINK BOMB. Every 3 pieces of the code (____________________) tell us a word (___________________________) that leads us to the right ingredient (___________________________). Remembering that many ingredients (___________________________) make up the bomb itself (__________________). The translator (________________________) reads until the signal comes to stop (______________________________). Your mission is done, you have served well, and rest assured that Dr. Evil’s Lair will never smell the same again. This activity is to help you understand protein synthesis. Our normal classroom has been converted into a cell. The lab table at the front of the room (my desk) has become the nucleus. The nucleus will contain the DNA strands, mRNA (a member of your group) needs to come up to the nucleus to copy the DNA strand (in mRNA code of course – if the DNA is AGT the mRNA would be UCA). mRNA must transcribe the DNA in the nucleus (the DNA must never leave the nucleus). The mRNA will now go back to his/her desk or lab table (a ribosome). On the ribosome the group needs to split mRNA into groups of 3 nitrogen bases (codons). Then you need to translate the anticodon (3 nitrogen base groups of tRNA) (opposite of codons if the mRNA is UCA then the tRNA anticodon is AGU). The tRNA anticodons will be hanging up around the class. Your groups must find the correct anticodon, flip over the card and find the word under the card (the amino acid). A string of amino acids makes up a protein (a sentence). Your group must also figure out the real amino acid sequence using the table. In DNA the nitrogen base sequence TAC means start (the beginning of your sentence) and ATT, ATC, and ACT means stop (or a period for your sentence).
