Bio 121: Chapter 17 Protein Synthesis Assignment
Objective: Students explore the process of protein synthesis and demonstrate an
understanding of the various steps involved through the completion of one of the following
activities.
Introduction
Protein synthesis is an essential process that occurs constantly within our cells. As you sit
reading this, the billions of cells in your body are translating stretches of your DNA into RNA
and creating the proteins that make your body look the way it does; everything from eye colour
to the shapes of your ears, to your ability to catalyze sugar is moulded by proteins following
your genetic instructions.
On the other side of the page you will find a list of activities to choose from. You must choose
one activity and complete it in class. Be sure to make a strong effort to clearly explain the
concept and to draw connections with the rest of the material in the section. You may work
together, but everyone must pass in their own individual, work.

There are several important terms described in Chapter 17. In your activity you must include
all of the following terms in your explanation of the process of protein synthesis.

Activities
Option 1: Text Work and Concept Web - Carefully read through Chapter 17 (pages 325-348).
There are three tasks:
a. List and define the essential vocabulary for the section. (20 marks)
b. Answer questions on handout.
c. Look carefully at the important concepts in Chapter 17. Most of them are in bold type on
the pages of your text. On a large piece of paper create a concept web that clearly
shows how the concepts are connected to each other. The design is up to you, but make
sure that you clearly show and explain the connections that exist by labeling the
connecting lines between concepts. Feel free to use colour and pictures to further
illustrate your web. Include all required terms. (30 Marks)
Option 2: Comic Strip - From Chapter 17, illustrate the process of protein synthesis in comic
strip form consisting of several panels (a minimum of 6 panels.) Each panel should have a
short explanation of the concept illustrated, and how it relates to the following panels. Be
creative! Include all required terms.
Option 3: Creative Writing - Write a short story, lengthy poem or a song detailing the journey
of an exon as it experiences the different stages of protein synthesis, from its place in DNA to
its final expression as a protein. In your writing you should provide explanations of these stages.
Be creative and thoughtful, but be accurate. Include all required terms.
Option 4: Flip-cards or poster format - Create a mini-book of flip cards or a poster that
provides illustrations and explanations of the different stages of protein synthesis. Your
drawings don't need to be beautiful, but they should be clear enough to illustrate the concepts.
Include all required terms.
Option 5: Scripted presentation or skit - Working alone, with a partner or small group,
prepare a scripted presentation or skit that demonstrates the processes of protein synthesis.
In addition to doing the presentation or skit, you must provide the script containing the
relevant information from Chapter 17.

To earn full value be sure to include the following items from the scoring key. All vocabulary
should be used in the proper context and the roles and processes of transcription and
translation need to be explained.
