Excel Project #1 – Due Date ????.
Description
Global Warming is one of the most important problems of our era. Global Warming refers to an
increase of global averaged temperatures in recent and future decades caused by the increase of
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change, the increase of greenhouse gas emissions produced by human activities has caused most
of the observed increase in global temperatures in the last sixty years. Climate Scientists estimate
that if the current growth of greenhouse emissions continue or increase, the temperature on Earth
may increase by 11°F by 2100.
Greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O) and water vapor, regulate
the temperature on Earth by absorbing heat from the sunlight and releasing it slowly helping to
maintain an averaged temperature in the atmosphere that make life possible. This is known as the
Greenhouse effect. Before the start of the Industrial Revolution, changes in the concentration of
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere were mainly due to natural phenomenon such as changes in
the Earth’s orbit or volcanoes. Afterwards, human activity has increased dramatically the
concentration of some greenhouse gases such as CO2 and NO2 in the atmosphere. Scientists
estimate that the growing concentration of greenhouse gases has increased the averaged global
temperature about 1°C only in the last century. The effects of global warming such as warmer
seasons and ice melting have become more evident in recent years. Long term effects of global
warming such as the sea level rise, increase of storms and droughts, among others, will radically
change the living conditions on Earth that can be devastating for the survival of several species
and have a considerable impact in the quality of human life.
In this lab, you will create a worksheet to explore the trend of CO2 emissions per regions from
1980 to 2005. You will use Energy Information Administration’s data to compute the growth rate
of CO2 emissions in each world region as well as the 5-year growth rate of CO2 emissions
worldwide in the last 25 years. You can use your worksheet to analyze the current trend of CO2
emissions as well as the growth rate of CO2 emissions per world region.
Directions:
This project requires several Excel skills that you should master to complete the project (click
here). You can acquire these skills by using the training sessions of the textbook and by reading
some useful Excel tutorials (see below). However, you will discover that not all the required
skills for the project are fully explained in these materials. On the other hand, the Excel Help
System offers you full explanations and examples the concepts as wells as any possible action
you want to perform in Excel.

I. Creating your Worksheet
1. Open MS Excel and create a new blank worksheet.
2. Activate the Correct TWO Initial Capitals and replace as you type AutoCorrect options
(Tools/AutoCorrect).
3. Using the data provided in the table below create the worksheet shown below:

Your spreadsheet should look like the following figure:
4. Rename the tab Sheet1 to CO2 Data.
5. Save your worksheet as CO2 Emissions in a folder.
II. Headings
1. Insert two new columns before column A.
2. Insert four new rows at the top.
3. Enter the text “CO2 Emissions from the Consumption and Flaring of Fossil Fuel” in cell A1.
4. Merge cells A1 to K1,
and center its text.
5. Enter the text 1980 – 2005 in cell A2.
6. Merge cells A2 to K2 and center its text.
7. Change the font in A1 and A2 to blue and bold and set the font size to 16.
8. Enter the text “Region” in cell C4. Change C4’s font to red, bold and set its font size to 15
pts.
9. Enter the text “World” in cell J5.
10. Enter the text “5-year % Growth Rate” in cell K5.
11. Enter the number 0.05 in cell K6.
12. Enter the text “1980-2005 % Growth Rate” in cell B8.
13. Select columns B to I (this is not an error) and use the Autofit feature to resize the width of
these columns so their headings fit (Format/Columns/AutoFit).
14. Enter 1980 in cell B6 and 1985 in cell B7, select both cells and use the Autofill feature to set
the remaining years.
15. Enter the text Year in cell A6. Change its font Color to green and set its size to 14 pts.
16. Merge cells A6 and A11.
17. Align the label in cell A6 vertically in the middle of the cell (Format/Cells/Alignment).
18. Set the font for all the labels in the spreadsheet to bold.
19. Since the label in K5 is a long title for a narrower single column, use
Format/Cells/Alignment/Horizontal/Distributed so the title spans the entire cell.
20. Add the text “Note: Data measured in Million Metric Tons of Carbon Dioxide” in cell A16.
21. Set the borders and colors of the headings as shown below:
III. Formulas
1. Place a formula to calculate 1980’s worldwide CO2 emissions in cell J6 by adding all the CO2
values per region. Copy and paste this formula all the way down.
2. Starting with 1985, place a formula in cell K7 to compute the rate of growth of CO2
emissions between 1980 and 1985. Copy and paste it all the way down.
Hint: In each case, the formula is the difference between this year’s CO2 emissions and the
previous year’s CO2 emissions divided by previous year CO2 emissions.
3. Stating at North America, write a formula to compute the 1980 – 2005 % Growth Rate. Copy
and paste it to the right to compute the growth rate for the remaining regions and the World.
Hint: In each case, the formula is the difference between the region’s 2005’ CO2 emissions
and the region’s 1980 CO2 emissions divided by region’s 1980 CO2 emissions.
IV. Formatting
1. Format the CO2 data values with commas and no decimal places (Format/Cells/Number).
2. Format the growth rate values as percentages with two decimal places
(Format/Cells/Number).
V. Charts and Graphs
1. Create a new worksheet named Graphs (or rename an existing worksheet) on which you will
save two graphs of the spreadsheet data. For each graph, be sure all titles, axes, data series,
and values are appropriately labeled. Be sure you select the appropriate data.
2. Create a column graph showing the CO2 Emissions per Region as Worldwide for the period
1980 - 2005.

1. Use Page Setup/Header Footer/Customized Footer to add a header and footer to your
workbook so that when printed, each page shows

the Footer menu or Customized Footer if necessary)
2. In the Page Setup, set the page to Landscape mode.
3. Set the Printing Area properly so all the information in the tab Data fits in one page.
4. Experiment with Print Preview to determine which pages are better formatted as portrait or
landscape when printed.
VI. Miscellaneous
1. Use the Properties option in the File menu to change the following characteristics of your
Excel workbook:
a. Title: Type CO2 Emissions by Region
b. Author: Type your name
c. Click OK and save your worksheet.
Submission
Follow directions carefully to receive full credit. Submit the final Excel file via WebCT Vista.
Please remember to submit the file in MS Excel 2003 format.
