Specific Learning outcomes for Biology 2.8 AS91160
This achievement standard is derived from The New Zealand Curriculum, Learning
Media, Ministry of Education, 2007, Level 7. By the end of this topic you should be able
to:
SLO – what you need to be able to do…
1. Describe the specialised features of plant and animal cells such as
arrangement of cells or cell types within a tissue, shape of cell, presence or
absence of a specific organelle, quantity or distribution of organelles within a
cell.
2. Describe the specialised features of unicellular organisms
3. Relate specialised features to the function of the cells or tissue
4. Show an understanding of the methods required to prepare biological
material for viewing under a light microscope, including staining, use of
cavity slides, use of cellulose, epidermal tears and cutting sections.
5. Prepare plant material for viewing under a light microscope
6. Prepare unicellular organisms for viewing under a light microscope
7. Show an understanding of the use of a light microscope by labelling the
parts of a microscope and describing their functions
8. View biological material using a light microscope to enable detail of cell
structures and components to be determined
9. Record observations of biological material in biological drawings using
accepted conventions. Consistency of observations with recognisable
shape and proportions and inclusion of typical organelles present in a cell,
appropriate to the magnification is required.
10. Carry out an investigation to explore biological material at the microscopic
level, preparing material, viewing material and recording observations in
biological drawings
11. Identify the observed specialised features and relate them to the function of
the cells.
12. Give reasons for how or why the specialised features you observe enable
the cells to effectively carry out their specific function
