Morphogenesis – the process of cell development.
1. All cells begin as a single cell
2. A horse grows and develops into an adult with millions of
cells through:
a. Cell growth
b. Mitosis
c. Cell division
3. Many different types of cells in full grown horses.
a. Differences in cell is controlled by genes
b. Information to program and guide growth is controlled
by chromosomes
c. Shape, size and chemical activity are controlled by the
surrounding tissues of the cells.
4. All cells have the same genetic information
a. Started at egg fertilization
5. Cells are NOT identical because in different types of cells
different genes are turned on and off.
6. Cells make their own proteins & structures they need to
function.
a. Blood cells make hemoglobin to carry oxygen.
7. Only about 10% of the genes are turned on in a cell.
a. Lots of combinations of genes to turn on to make lots
of different tissues.
8. DO NOT understand all the processed involved with cells still
not understood.
a. We still have lots to learn!

Cell Division- where one cell divides in half to
become 2 cells
1. Nucleus controls cell division
a. 2 events must take place
i. Copying of the DNA
1. Holds the basic genetic information of
the cell.
ii. Orderly separation (split) of everything in
the cell
b. Each new cell must have the exact same genetic
code as the parent cell it split from.
Mitotic Cycle – the name of the cycle of mitosis
1. Usually only takes 2 hours
2. Has 6 stages
a. Prophase
b. Prometaphase
c. Metaphase
d. Anaphase
e. Telopohase
f. Interphase
3. Interphase is the long phase
4. Mitosis depends on 4 major events
© Birch Valley Ranch at birchvalleyranch.com
a. Coiling
b. Orientation
c. Movement
d. Uncoiling
Meiotic Cycle – creates a new cell by taking ½ of
the genetic material from a mother and ½ from the
father.
1. May take days or weeks
2. 5 stages of Meiosis are
a. Prophase
b. Prometaphase
c. Metaphase
d. Anaphase
e. Interphase
