CONNECT Climate Change – The Evidence Be READY TO LEARN Start thinking like a Geographer Make sure you have your book, write today’s date and title. Meet Sir David Attenborough. He is stood on a graph that shows three models of climate change: • Natural induced Climate Change • Human induced Climate Change • Natural and Human induced Climate Change TASK: Which colours do you think represent the above models. There are 3 colours and 3 models. LO: To explore the evidence of climate change during the quaternary period. LO: To explore the evidence of climate change during the quaternary period. SUCCESS CRITERIA: • I can recall what the Quaternary period is. • I can define climate change. • I can analyse evidence for climate change. Climate Change – The Evidence and Causes ACTIVATE Be READY TO LEARN Think like a Geographer What is Climate Change? Climate change is the long-term change in weather. Global climate change occurs very slowly over thousands of years. Write your own definition of climate change in your books. KEEP IT SIMPLE. LO: To explore the evidence of climate change during the quaternary period. ACTIVATE Be READY TO LEARN Think like a Geographer The Quaternary Period The Earth is believed to be 4.55 bn years old and so studying the Earth has led us to devise a geological timescale that divides Earth’s history into a series of eras, periods and epochs. The period of timeline that spans from 2.6 million years ago to the present day is called the Quaternary Period. This period marks a time when there was a global drop in temperature and the most recent ice age began. It is thought that there have been 5 ice ages in Earth’s history. LO: To explore the evidence of climate change during the quaternary period. ACTIVATE Be READY TO LEARN Think like a Geographer Question Time How many years ago did the quaternary period begin? A) 2.6 million B) 4.55 billion C) 2.5 million What did the quaternary period mark the start of? A) Global increase in temperatures B) Global decrease in temperatures LO: To explore the evidence of climate change during the quaternary period. DEMONSTRATE Be READY TO LEARN Think like a Geographer DEMONSTRATE Be READY TO LEARN Think like a Geographer Using the cards in your envelope, compile a case file of evidence to support the case that climate change is real. LO: To explore the evidence of climate change during the quaternary period. DEMONSTRATE Be READY TO LEARN Think like a Geographer Suggest two sources of evidence for long-term climate change during the quaternary period (4). Source 1: ………………………………………………………………........................................... ………………………………………………………………………………………………………... Source 2: ………………………………………………………………........................................... ………………………………………………………………………………………………………... SUCCESS CRITERIA: State two sources of evidence. Develop your point – what is it? what has it proven? LO: To explore the evidence of climate change during the quaternary period. DEMONSTRATE Be READY TO LEARN Think like a Geographer Suggest two sources of evidence for long-term climate change during the quaternary period (4). MARK SCHEME: Any two from: ice cores (1) can be used to measure past temperatures and gases in the atmosphere and compare this to todays (1), global temperature increase (1) the earth has warmed up 1⁰C in the last 100 years (1), sea level rise (1) caused by thermal expansion or melting ice (1), glacial retreat/melting ice (1), artic sea ice has thinned by 65% since 1975 (1). LO: To explore the evidence of climate change during the quaternary period. Consolidat e Be READY TO LEARN Think like a Geographer Write the Learning Objective. On your whiteboards write… 4 sources of evidence that supports climate change 2 pieces of evidence that supports climate change (FACTS).
