Adaptation • a characteristic or trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce in its environment. Evolution • Evolution is the process by which populations change over long periods of time. Fossil Record • The fossil record shows us some of the changes that have occurred over time. • This fossil of Archaeopteryx is a link between reptiles and birds. • What are its reptilian characteristics? What are its bird-like or avian characteristics? Charles Darwin • Served as a naturalist on a trip to the Galapagos onboard the Beagle (an old naval ship). • This voyage and other observations, such as the selective breeding of dogs, led to his theory of natural selection. Natural Selection – the process by which evolution occurs • Overproduction – each specie will have more offspring than will survive • Genetic Variation – individuals within a population have slight differences • Struggle for Survival – individuals within a population compete for resources (food, shelter, etc.) • Successful Reproduction – those individuals that are best adapted to environment are more likely to survive and reproduce – passing on the traits that allowed them to survive
