Anaerobic Respiration
Questions to Consider:
What role does oxygen (O2) play in cellular respiration?
When is it used?
What does it do?
What would happen if a cell did not have oxygen? What two
processes would shut down?
Anaerobic Respiration
• If a cell lacks oxygen, anaerobic respiration (fermentation) takes place
• In anaerobic respiration, glycolysis occurs as usual
• Glucose is broken down into pyruvate, NADH, and ATP
• Must regenerate (re-make) NAD+ in order to continue glycolysis
Anaerobic Respiration
In order to regenerate NAD+, two possible options for pyruvate
Lactic acid
(mammals and bacteria)
Alcohol
(yeast)
