Cell Project
During our study of cells you will be required to complete a cell project. You will need to pick
either a plant or animal cell. You will be given two class periods to work on your project. You
will be allowed to work on your own or in a group of two or three. If your group does not finish
in the allotted time, you will have to meet with your group on your own time to finish it. You
may stay after school on certain days or take the project home with you in order to get it done.
Project options
1. Make a 3D Cell –
Use materials that you purchase to create a 3 dimensional model of a plant or animal cell.
This option can be done using Styrofoam and/or other materials. On a separate sheet of
paper or on little “posts” directly on the project a key should be provided. Include each
organelle’s name and function on the key. This option will take the most amount of time.
2. Design a Poster –
Use poster board and create a poster of either a plant or animal cell. Your cell should be
colorful and meet the criteria above. The poster should show organelles labeled along with
a description of each organelle’s function. I will be able to supply you with poster board.
Be creative and add materials such as construction paper, foam board, colored pencils,
markers, etc.
3. Construct a Display Board –
Make a display board that could stand up on a desk and present a plant or animal cell to a
viewer. The viewer should learn about the cell parts and their functions. Your display
board should be colorful to attract attention. You will need to purchase your own board.
Project requirements
The project should be labeled as a plant or animal cell.
The organelles MUST be labeled, either directly or with a key, with their names and
functions. They should be spelled correctly.
You must include the following organelles – 15 for plant and 13 for animal cells:
Cell wall (plant cell)
Cell membrane
Chloroplasts (plant cell)
Cytoplasm
Cytoskeleton
Endoplasmic reticulum - rough
Endoplasmic reticulum - smooth
Golgi complex
Lysosomes
Mitochondria
Nucleolus
Nucleus
Ribosomes
Vacuoles
Vesicles
Are the relationships between the parts (if any) shown correctly? Are some of the
ribosomes on the endoplasmic reticulum and in the cytoplasm? Is the smooth and rough
endoplasmic reticulum near the nucleus? If a plant cell, are the chloroplasts around the
vacuole?

Additional project options (may have different grade requirements)
4. Write a Cell Story –
Write a story about a particular organelle that will be the main character. Your story
should have a conflict with at least four other organelles. The problem should be resolved
by the end of the story. The story must be accurate in its portrayal of the organelles. Be
creative – keep your reader’s attention by developing your characters by using humor.
Finally, your story should be typed and double spaced and a minimum of five pages using
a 12 point font of your choice.
5. Cell City –
See the “Welcome to Cell City!” sheet for the criteria for this project.
6. Your Idea –
If you have a project idea in mind that is different from those options listed on this paper, I
am willing to hear what you would like to do. We can discuss your idea at the end of class.
Evaluation
This project will be worth 75 points. Here is a general breakdown of the project. A more detailed
grade sheet will be provided for you to turn in with your project and for you to use while working
on your project. If you work in a group you are expected to contribute equally. I will watch your
activity, cooperation, and team-work (if applicable) in class while you are working with your
partner(s).
