Lesson #3: Plant cells Objective: - Make, draw and label plant cells Homework Review: Parts of a Cell • Cell wall: A tough, rigid covering made of cellulose giving support to plant cells. • Vacuole: A large space filled with cell sap (a weak solution of sugar and salt) in plant cells. • Chloroplast: Only in plant cells. Contain chlorophyll used for photosynthesis. • Cytoplasm: Jelly-like semifluid where all the chemical reactions happen • Cell Membrane: A thin skin around the cell holding it together. It also controls what goes in and out of the cell. • Nucleus: Controls what the cell does. Contains DNA Making a plant slide 1. Take a single leaf from the stem of an Elodea plant. 2. Mount it in a drop of water on a slide using a mounted needle. 3. Carefully lower a cover slip onto the slide using the mounted needle. 4. Place the slide on the microscope stage and focus under low power. 5. Change to a higher power lens. 6. Observe – draw two or three cells and label the visible structures. You should be able to see the cell wall, chloroplasts and vacuole. 7. Look at a cell from an onion root. What part of the plant cell is missing? Why? Let’s make a human plant and animal cells! Remember: Plant cells have: -chloroplast, cell wall and vacuole Closer In groups, sort the images into plant and animal cells, be sure to explain why using the correct vocabulary. Remember that next class you will be assessed on plant and animal cells next class.
