To reinforce the organelles and their specific jobs, we put together a “cell” made of different items. Below is a description of each item and what organelle it represented. Square container: cell wall We compared animal and plant cells, as well as discussed how the cell works in the various body systems. Fun Facts Worldwide, over 50 million roses are given for Valentine's Day each year. Amongst the earliest Valentine's Day gifts were candies. The most common were chocolates in heart shaped boxes. Galileo was the first to see Saturn's rings in 1610. Writing Fun with Pumpkins By Mrs. Smith The fifth graders in Mrs. Smith and Mrs. McNally's English class had fun with pumpkins in October! The focus of the lesson was the use of adjectives to describe their pumpkins. Using adjectives in their writing is stressed to meet the 6 Trait Writing Process. As they began looking at the pumpkins, they listed all of the nouns they could describe. Then they made a list of possibilities of adjectives across from that noun. Next, they formed their complete sentences into a short descriptive paragraph. Lastly, they edited their rough draft and rewrote it in their best handwriting for publication. A drawing was made of their pumpkin according to their descriptions. Who knew writing could be fun?! Each month a new brain teaser or puzzle will be shown here. If you are the first to correctly report the answer to the teacher listed, you will receive an awesome prize! Put those thinking Hiawatha h Middle School caps on! Secret Message Egg What You Need Small bowl Measuring cup Alum What to Do Why It Works In the bowl, dissolve one part alum in one part vinegar. Mix well. Use the Cotton Swab to write or draw something on the eggshell using the alum and vinegar solution as ink. Let dry. Remove the eggshell from the egg. The vinegar (acetic acid) dissolves the calcium carbonate in the eggshell, allowing the alum to permeate the shell and discolor the egg white. White vinegar Cotton Swabs What Happens Hard-boiled egg The alum-and-vinegar solution dries invisible, but when the eggshell is removed, the writing is visible on the egg's surface (and the egg is still edible).
