I Will Divide (to the tune of “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor) At first, I was a cell, I was petrified Kept thinking, I’d be stuck in G1 and grow too large in size But then I moved on into S phase and made a copy of my DNA And I grew strong (in G2) And then I got my spindle on! Chorus Oh, no, but I, I will divide! Oh, through the stages of mitosis, I know my genes will stay alive I've made two new daughter cells, and they’ve got all my DNA I will divide! I will divide! Hey, hey! The first stage is prophase, the nucleus falls apart The DNA forms chromosomes, there’s no more hiding in the dark They attach themselves to spindle fibers with their centromeres And then later they split evenly to each new cell, have no fear! Metaphase, the second stage The spindle grabs the chromosomes and moves them into place! They all line up in the middle (or the equator, or the metaphase plate) Now they’re all ready to be split, and it’s not a single moment too late! Anaphase, go! separate the chromosomes! Split those centromeres and take the chromatids to opposite poles! When they reach their destination two new nuclei reform That’s telophase, then we split the cells in cytokinesis -Two daughters are born! Repeat Chorus Oh, no, but I, I will divide! Oh, through the stages of mitosis, I know my genes will stay alive I've made two new daughter cells, and they’ve got all my DNA I will divide! I will divide! Hey, hey!
