Background: You have been learning about living things. Living things are made of cells. Cells carry out all life processes. New cells come from existing cells. Cells are too small to be seen with the eye alone. You can look and study cells using a microscope. Plant cells and animal cells are similar, but they are different in shape and in some of their parts. Plant cells tend to be rectangular, while animal cells ten to be spherical, or even irregular. You have also learned that plant and animal cells have essential structures and functions. Plant cells include the nucleus, cell wall, cell membrane, vacuole, chloroplasts, and cytoplasm. Animal cells include the nucleus, cell membrane, vacuole, and cytoplasm. Challenge: You will use a digital microscope to study both plant and animal cells. Then you will choose one to sketch. In your sketch, you will need to include the vital structures in the cell. After you have completed your sketch, you will build a model of the cell using various materials found in the Maker Space. You must include all major structures in your cell. The final model should be neat, include diagram labels of structures, and be accurate. Criteria: Must be either a plant or an animal cell Include all major structures Includes labels of structures Accurately diagram the cell Fit on a piece of cardstock Materials: Glue Markers Pipe cleaners Glitter glue Tissue paper Glass beads Pom poms Other supplies as needed Tools: Hot glue gun Scissors Patti Motley Pattie Elementary School 2016 SCI 5.5 TSW investigate and understand that organisms are made of one or more cells and have distinguishing characteristics that play a vital role in the organism’s ability to survive and thrive in its environment. 1) Use the microscope to observe plant and animal cells. Choose either a plant or animal slide and sketch the visible structures in the box below. 2) Use your sketch to build a model of the cell using the provided materials. Use a sheet of white cardstock for your model.
