Chap. 2-1 Vocabulary
Cell Wall – Tough rigid outer coverings, protects the cell and gives it shape.
[Wall of the house] – (Plant cells only)
Cell Membrane – Protects the cell and regulates interactions within the cells environment.
[Door of the house] - (Both plant and animal cells)
Organelles – Structures in the cytoplasm of the Eukaryotic Cells
[All the stuff in the house - (Both plant and animal cells)
Cytoplasm – The jellylike material that contains the organelles.
[Air within the house] - (Both plant and animal cells)
Nucleus –An organelle that directs and controls the activities of the cell.
[Homeowner of the house] - (Both plant and animal cells)
Nuclear Membrane – A membrane surrounding the nucleus that protects it, and regulates
The materials that go into and out of the nucleus.
[Clothes and skin of the Homeowner] (Both plant and animal cells)
Chloroplast – Organelles that use Carbon Dioxide, Water and Light to make energy for the cell.
[Kitchen of the house] – (Plant Cells only)
Mitochondria – Organelles that break down food & releases energy.
[Fireplace and Electricity within the house] - (Both plant and animal cells)
Ribosomes – Makes proteins. Proteins are substances involved in most cell activities.
[Oven/Grill/Microwave of the house] - (Both plant and animal cells)
Endoplasmic Reticulum – Folded membranes that transport materials within the cell.
[Hallway or Pipes within the house] - (Both plant and animal cells)
Golgi Bodies, Golgi Complex or Golgi Apparatus – Transports materials both inside and outside of the cell.
[Backpack or luggage of the house] - (Both plant and animal cells)
Vesicles – Deliver substances from the Golgi Bodies to other areas both inside and outside the cell.
[Laundry Basket or Storage crate] - (Both plant and animal cells)
Vacuole – A storage place for food, water & wastes.
[Refrigerator, Closet, Pantry in a house] (Both Plant and animal cells)
Lysosomes – Contain chemicals that break down wastes, food and worn out cell parts.
[Garbage disposal or recycle container within a house] - (Both plant and animal cells)
Volume – The space inside of an object or the amount an object can hold. V=LxWxH.
[The square footage of a house or a room in the house] - (Both plant and animal cells)
Levels Of Organization
Cell – The basic unit of life able to perform life functions.
[A Brick of the house]
Tissue – A group of similar cells working together to do a job.
[Walls in the house]
Organ – A group of tissues working together to do a job.
[A room in a house]
Organ System – A group of organs working together to do a job.
[A floor or wing of a house]
Organism – A group of organs systems working together to do a job.
[The house]
